Five pieces, $480.60 all in. One of them is a tuxedo trouser, and we'll say so.

Five pieces, $480.60 total, $19.40 under budget: Todd Snyder's Donegal military overshirt at $144, Todd Snyder's Italian wool trouser at $74, a Naadam organic cotton button-down at $89.60, a Todd Snyder cotton-cashmere crewneck at $94 and a Beckett Simonon full-grain bifold at $79. At full price the same five come to $1,211. Before you add anything to a cart, one honest note: the trouser is a tuxedo trouser.

Todd Snyder Donegal Military Overshirt, Charcoal, 100% wool Donegal, woven in Italy−52%

The jacket that replaces a blazer

The Donegal overshirt is $144, down from $298, in 100% wool Donegal tweed woven in Italy. Donegal is the tweed with flecks of color knotted through it, named for the county in Ireland where it started. In charcoal those flecks keep it from looking flat, and from across a room it reads like a sport coat.

A military overshirt is cut like a shirt, buttons like a shirt and wears like a jacket. No shoulder pads, no lining to fuss with. Throw it over the button-down, or over the crewneck, and you've covered the days a blazer would be too much and a sweater alone too little. Sizes are in from XS to XXL.

Todd Snyder Denim Military Overshirt, Indigo, 100% cotton Japanese denim−59%

If your office runs casual, the denim military overshirt is $134, down from $328, in 100% cotton Japanese denim with elbow patches. It fades like your jeans do and saves you $10. For a work wardrobe, I'd still take the Donegal. Wool tweed looks like a decision. Denim looks like Saturday.

The trouser, and what it is

Todd Snyder Italian Tuxedo Trouser, Navy, 98% wool, 2% nylon (Tollegno 1900)−81%
Todd SnyderItalian Tuxedo Trouser, Navy98% wool, 2% nylon (Tollegno 1900)$74 $398Shop at Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder's Italian trouser is $74, down from $398, 81% off. It's Tollegno 1900 wool, 98% wool and 2% nylon, from one of the old mills of the Biella wool district, and the garment is made in Italy. You will not find Italian-made trousers in mill-named cloth for $74 often.

It's a tuxedo trouser. There's a satin stripe down each side seam, satin at the waistband and side tabs instead of belt loops. That makes it a dressy piece, not a Monday-to-Friday pant. It's the trouser for a dinner, a wedding or the holiday party, and on a sharp day at the office, with the navy crewneck pulled over it and dark shoes, the stripe reads as deliberate. If your office is buttoned-up, or you need one pair of pants for every day, skip it. It's final sale, and sizes are thin: 30/32, 31/30, 31/32, 32/34, 34/32 and 34/34.

For the other days, wear the four other pieces with the plain wool trousers or dark chinos you already own. A work wardrobe doesn't need two of everything. It needs a few things that go with each other.

The shirt

NAADAM Organic Cotton Button Down Shirt (White), Organic cotton−30%
NAADAMOrganic Cotton Button Down Shirt (White)Organic cotton$89.60 $128Shop at Naadam

Naadam's organic cotton button-down is $89.60, down from $128. It's poplin, not oxford cloth, so it's smoother, lighter and a little crisper than the button-downs most of us grew up with. White, button-down collar, sizes XS to XXL. It's also the smallest markdown in the outfit at 30%. If you already own two good white shirts, leave it out and you're at $391.

The knit

Todd Snyder Cotton-Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Navy), 95% cotton, 5% cashmere−59%
Todd SnyderCotton-Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Navy)95% cotton, 5% cashmere$94 $228Shop at Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder's cotton-cashmere crewneck is $94, down from $228. It's 95% cotton and 5% cashmere, which makes it a soft cotton sweater rather than a warm one, and that suits an office with the heat cranked. Navy goes under the charcoal overshirt, over the white shirt and with the tuxedo trouser on its one dressy day. XL is sold out; XS, S, M, L and XXL are left.

The leather

Beckett Simonon Bennett Bifold Wallet, Smooth Full-Grain (Brown), Full-grain Italian calfskin−50%
Beckett SimononBennett Bifold Wallet, Smooth Full-Grain (Brown)Full-grain Italian calfskin$79 $159Shop at Beckett Simonon

Beckett Simonon's Bennett bifold is $79, down from $159, in full-grain Italian calfskin from an LWG Gold-rated tannery in Arzignano, the town at the center of Italy's tanning trade. Full grain means the top of the hide is left on, so it darkens and takes on a shine as you carry it. Brown and black are both in stock. The trouser has side tabs, so you don't need a belt this round.

Allen Edmonds Stanton Bit Loafer (Factory Second), Walnut, European calfskin, Blake-stitched, leather sole−68%
Allen EdmondsStanton Bit Loafer (Factory Second), WalnutEuropean calfskin, Blake-stitched, leather sole$149.98 $475Shop at Allen Edmonds

The shoe I'd want here is Allen Edmonds' Stanton bit loafer in walnut, a factory second at $149.98, down from $475. Calfskin, Blake-stitched, made in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Factory second means a cosmetic flaw the brand wouldn't sell at full price. Blake construction stitches the sole straight through to the inside, so it's lighter and bends more easily than a welted shoe. Swap it in for the wallet and you're at $551.58, over budget. Drop the shirt as well and you're at $461.98. If you need shoes more than a wallet, that's the move.
